Michigan State University Extension Services for West Michigan Families

Published in Blog

Michigan State University recently reached out to us to make sure we are aware of their community services in West Michigan.  I have looked at their offerings and they appear to provide information and classes and subjects that could be valuable to our client.  Some of the subjects are:

  1. Parenting and being a nurturing family
  2. Co-parenting for divorced/separated/never married parents
  3. Stress less with mindfulness
  4. Alternatives to anger
  5. Basic money management
  6. Nutrition and cooking

As a person that is interested in lifelong learning, I am interested in exploring MSU's offerings and have signed up to attend Mindfulness for Parents and Caregivers: Helping Kids Manage Stress on April 25.  You can check out their other classes at http://msue.anr.msu.edu/.  Attached are some of their fliers for upcome events.

Get a Prenup. Save your gold.

Published in Blog

A prenup can be worth a pound of gold or more. Alimony is alive and well in Michigan and it can be expensive. It hurts rich men, poor men, young men and old men. In some cases it worse for poor men than for rich men because despite the law requiring that a man have the ability to pay it, judges often require men of modest means to support their ex-wives. The best way to avoid alimony, a prenup. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Prenups are not very expensive and they are a lot cheaper than alimony. Protect your gold.

Warning Label

Published in Blog

There is an article in the Huffington Post that proposes a marriage warning label. Here is the post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/william-quigley/a-modest-proposal-why-can_b_982566.html. While this article does not help most of our clients, it is a worthwhile idea.

Inability to Get Along: Change of Custody?

Published in Blog

Recently, the Court of Appeals found that parents' inability to get along and agree with respect to their children was sufficient grounds to review a custody order. Constant disagreements between parents that negatively impact children are generally not taken lightly by the court. As we have previously posted, it is often onerous for a parent to request a modification of custody once it has been established by a court order.
